Drifting from your values and the slow pull of wrong relationships

1 Kings 11:1-13
Today's Passage
"As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods." — 1 Kings 11:4
The Story
Solomon was the wisest person who ever lived. He wrote Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. He built the temple. He had a direct encounter with God early in his life where he was given wisdom beyond anyone before or after him. And in his later years, his heart was turned away by relationships that pulled him toward other gods. The wisest man in history drifted — not suddenly, but slowly, relationship by relationship.
The warning in Solomon's story is not for the obviously foolish. It is for people who have a real relationship with God, real wisdom, and real purpose — and who slowly allow the wrong relationships and influences to redirect their heart. Drift rarely feels like a dramatic fall. It feels like small choices that don't seem that important at the time. The question is not whether you are drifting right now. It is whether you are paying attention.
Prayer
God, I can see in Solomon's story something I am afraid of — a slow drift away from what is true, pulled by the relationships and things around me. I don't want to look up in five years and realize I am far from where I wanted to be. Give me the courage to evaluate what is pulling me. Show me any relationship or pattern that is quietly turning my heart. Help me stay close to You as I grow older, not just as I start. In Jesus' name, Amen.
